The parents of visiting Chinese scholar Yingying Zhang who was abducted while studying at the University of Illinois spoke Tuesday for the first time since an arrest was made, asking the White House for help finding her.

中国访问学者章莹颖于美国伊利诺伊大学学习期间遭到绑架，8月22日，自嫌疑犯被逮捕以来，其父母首次公开讲话，请求白宫帮助他们找到章莹颖。

The family sent a letter last week to the president, asking him to "direct all federal resources to try to find Yingying," attorney Zhidong Wang of Chicago said Monday.

上周，章莹颖家人致信美国总统，希望特朗普“能指示所有能动用的联邦资源，以尽快找到章莹颖”。芝加哥华人律师王志东8月21日向记者表示。

Investigators have said they believe 26-year-old Yingying Zhang is dead, although her body hasn't been found. Zhang's mother and younger brother flew to Illinois on Saturday. Her father and boyfriend have been in the U.S. since June 17.

此前调查者表示，相信章莹颖已经死亡，尽管尸体仍然下落不明。章莹颖的母亲和弟弟于8月19日抵达伊利诺伊州，而其父亲和男朋友自6月17日起就一直待在美国。

Zhang graduated from Beijing's prestigious Peking University before arriving at U of I in the spring of 2017. Her case sent shockwaves across China. 

章莹颖毕业于久负盛名的北京大学，随后于2017年春季赴伊利诺伊大学学习。她的这起案件在中国引起了轩然大波。

"As a loving father to your own children, you can understand what we are going through," said Zhang Ronggao, father of Yingying, in the letter to the U.S. president.

“作为孩子的父亲，我相信您能理解我们现在的心情。” 章莹颖的父亲章荣高在给特朗普的信中写道。

He said Yingying's dream was to finish her studies in the U.S. and return to China to become a university professor. "Yingying means the whole world to us. She has always made us proud."

他说，莹颖的梦想是在美国完成学业后，回到中国当一名大学教授。“莹颖就是我们的一切，是我们的全世界，也一直是我们的骄傲。”

Zhang Ronggao expressed his grief and desperation in the letter, saying "with each passing day, the chances of finding Yingying alive decrease."

章荣高在信中流露了自己的悲痛和绝望，“随着时间的流逝，莹颖生还的机会越来越渺茫。”

The letter was read out by Yingying's family at a press briefing on Tuesday.

章莹颖的家人在22日的记者发布会上宣读了这封信的内容。

"We will not go back (to China) unless we find Yingying," the family told Xinhua in an interview Monday.

The family also explained the usage of the funds raised under the name of Zhang Yingying at the press conference. Besides the 50,000-dollars reward for clues to whereabouts of Yingying, part of the fund has been used to finance the daily life of the family members in the U.S., under strict supervision.

记者会上，家人还宣布了以章莹颖名义筹集到的善款如何使用。除了悬赏5万美元寻找章莹颖失踪线索之外，部分善款被用于其家人留在美国期间的日常开销，款项的使用受到严密监督。

Zhang Yingying went missing on June 9 after entering a black Saturn Astra. FBI arrested Brendt Christensen, the car owner, on June 30, accusing him of kidnapping Zhang on June 9 in Urbana, 225 km southwest of Chicago.

6月9日，章莹颖乘坐上一辆黑色土星阿斯特拉轿车，从此失去了联系。联邦调查局于6月30日逮捕了车主布伦特·克里斯滕森，起诉其于6月9日在位于芝加哥西南部225公里的乌尔班纳绑架了章莹颖。

Christensen has pleaded not guilty at the courthouse.

Our daughter, Yingying Zhang, went missing in Urbana, Illinois on June 9, 2017, while she was in the process of beginning her graduate studies at the University of Illinois. We have been informed by the local and federal law enforcement authorities that Yingying was kidnapped and is presumed to be dead. While an arrest has been made, Yingying’s body has not been found. You may already be aware of this situation, as this story has received a lot of media coverage and gained attention on social media websites, both here in the United States and in China, and it is being widely followed by the Chinese public.
